omanis and their cars
oman was my private trip destination in 2017. i wanted to discover this interesting culture, get to know and examine its everyday life and norms. directly at the airport in muscat, i was fascinated by the image of men in their traditional robes and clean white outlander.
in the desert state of oman there has been a law since 1973 that cars must always be clean. although the country suffers from water shortage and petrol is even cheaper than water, sultan qabus ibn said wants clean cars on the streets. he also finances the renovation of the facades of houses on main roads, as the appearance of the country next to and on the roads is very important to him.
since there is almost no public transport in oman, one is dependent on one's own car in the vast desert state. it serves not only as a means of transport but also as a status symbol.
a specific car culture has developed around it. thus interesting, subtle design solutions can be discovered, which show the handling and the confrontation of the omanis and their cars.
small accessories, like an adhesive foam that protects against scratches, in the look of a kitchen sponge, camouflage suits for cars that protect against dust, up to the partner look with the car in color, materiality and patterning can be seen on the streets, parking lots and garages.
big, white, clean outlanders all over the desert
